Samsung Announced that Display will also finish lcd production by the end of the year. The development comes after consumer interest in LCDs declined, and Samsung is pushing Quantum Dot display technology as the next major industry trend.
Demand for LCD technology has been declining over the past few years, OLes are becoming increasingly common on TVs and are an important feature for battery savings on the latest smartphones. Even Apple, which remains one of the biggest customers of Samsung screens, helped by switching to OLED for its flagship iPhones.
Samsung aims to build a new Q1 series for 65-inch QD displays scheduled for next year at its local plant.
Samsung also noted that existing LCD orders will be offered to customers “seamlessly” and that the company’s LCD workforce will move to OLED and QD jobs after this transition.
